In ancient times, people in Nepal used oil lamps (Diyo) made from clay or metal. These lamps were fueled with mustard oil or ghee and were widely used in homes, temples, and religious ceremonies.
Even today, lighting a diyo remains an important cultural practice during festivals like Tihar and Diwali, symbolizing prosperity and the victory of light over darkness.
Electricity arrived in Nepal in the early 20th century. One of the earliest hydroelectric projects was the Pharping Hydropower Station, which started generating electricity in 1911 during the Rana period.
This historic project marked the beginning of electric lighting in Nepal. However, electricity was initially available only in limited areas of Kathmandu.
After the 1950s, Nepal gradually expanded its electricity network. With the establishment of Nepal Electricity Authority, power generation and distribution improved across the country.
Traditional incandescent bulbs became common in homes, offices, and streets.
Today, Nepal is rapidly adopting modern lighting technologies such as LED bulbs, smart lighting systems, and solar lights. These technologies are:
Energy efficient
Long lasting
Environmentally friendly
LED lighting has significantly reduced electricity consumption in homes and businesses.
With increasing focus on renewable energy and smart technology, Nepal’s lighting future looks bright. Solar-powered lights, smart home systems, and efficient LED technologies are becoming more common.
As technology continues to evolve, lighting will play an even greater role in improving safety, productivity, and quality of life across Nepal.
